Kinnaur is said to be the land of God. There is no doubt as the land has significant beauty that anyone visiting it would be would name it paradise. One of such beauty of Kinnaur is Kalpa which is situated at an altitude of 2960 metres in the Himalayas.

The town of Kalpa has great importance in religions as well. One can see many temples and monasteries in the region, some old and some new but carrying splendid architecture. For those who love history and architecture of old buildings, this place is a must visit!

Kalpa- A Beauty of Kinnaur


Kalpa is a town in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh. It has an elevation of 2960 metres above sea level. It is located it is at a distance of 565 kilometres from Delhi and around 220 kilometres from Shimla.


Kalpa can be reached by Air, Road or Rail. The simplest way to reach Kalpa is by bus only. One can get a bus from ISBT Kashmere Gate, New Delhi to Shimla. From Shimla, you can get a direct bus to Kalpa.

If you are coming by train then the nearest railway station is in Shimla. It is at a distance of 265 kilometres and from there you’ll have to take a bus. The nearest airport is also at Shimla and from there you can either take a bus or taxi is also available till any town in Kinnaur.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to enjoy the beauty of Kalpa is the summer month. You can plan a trip between May to August. The weather is pretty and pleasant. Tourist from all over the world come here to enjoy the beauty and adventure in Kalpa. Winters are Harsh and therefore are not advised for tourists to visit at during this time.


Climate at Kalpa

The weather of Kalpa is very pleasant in the summer months. The average temperature remains between 9 degrees to 13 degrees. This time is a perfect time for visiting Kalpa and one can see a lot of Travellers coming here during this time. It is an ideal time for sightseeing and trekking.

Monsoon starts late in Kalpa around the month of November and lasts only till December. At this time the road conditions are not very good and cases of landslides occur frequently. Tourist can avoid coming here during this time.


Kalpa receives heavy snowfall during the winter months from January to March. The temperature is below the freezing point for most of the time. The whole region goes to hibernation during this time.

Culture of Kalpa

Culture of Kalpa is a mixture of Hindu and Buddhist culture. There are many temples dedicated to both Hindu and Buddhist God and Goddesses. Many festivals celebrated by locals. One of the main festivals of culture is Phulech festival which is celebrated with great excitement.


It falls in the month of September and October. In this festival, people collect flowers from the surrounding areas and offer it to the god of the village. After the prayers, the flowers are distributed among the people. Most of the people depend on farming for their livelihood. Apple is a major Cash crop for this region.

Places to Visit in Kalpa


There is an ancient Kothi which is situated at a distance of 3 km from Reckong Peo. This Kothi has amazing architecture with the perfect scenery of Majestic Kinner Kailash Hills local people have made this temple which is dedicated to goddess Chandigarh Devi there is a golden image of the Goddess in the inner Chamber of the temple there are colourful trees loaded with fruits All Around The Temple giving it a perfect feel for nature lovers

Kinner Kailash is a high mountain range with an altitude of 6500 above the sea level this mountain is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva. The mesmerizing snow Laden pics and the overall view make it appear like heaven on earth many of the people go there for trekking. As it is also religiously important to Hindus and Buddhist it has great sacred importance too.


Suicide Point

The famous Suicide Point is at a walking distance of 3 kilometres from the village of Kalpa. The trail is through red apple orchids which gives an excellent view.

Batseri Village

Batseri village is located on the left bank of river this village can only be tracked on food there are two temples in the village one of Lord Buddha and mother of Lord Badri Narayan.

This village is popular for its antique handicrafts which are sold here. One can get shawls, caps, gloves and many other woollen items of very good quality.  Pine nuts and Chilgoza which is grown in abundance in this region is another famous thing of this village.

Sapni Fort

Sapni Fort of Kinnaur belongs to King Padam Singh who was the ruler of this region. This Fort has a captivating architecture which tells about the talent of people of those times. There are seven stories of the Fort. The fifth story has a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali.

There is an excellent piece of architectures and carvings which you can see at different places in the Fort. Everything is so perfectly decorated that impresses everyone. If you are a person who loves history and ancient buildings then this place is a must visit for you.
