Rajgundha Trek is a trek located in the lap of the mother nature in the Kangra district of Himachal. It is located in the hill town of Bir which is famous for its paragliding activity at a distance of around 520 kms from New Delhi and 210 kms from Shimla. Known for its natural beauty, Rajguundha Trek is a 3-days and 2-night trek lying in the oak and deodar beauty.

Rajgundha trek is located in the Kangra district of Himachal at an altitude of 8,900 ft above the sea level. This trek takes you to the ancient villages of the state which are unexplored by many of the trekkers.
One has to reach Bir and from there to Billing which is the place from where the trek starts. Billing is situated at a distance of 14 kms from Bir. Bir billing is famous for its paragliding adventure and attracts many adventure enthusiast every year.
How to Reach
If you want to go by air, you can take a flight from Delhi to Dharamshala and then take a taxi or local bus but this would cost you more. You can also opt for a Volvo bus. There are 2 kinds of Volvo available. First is HRTC Volvo bus and second is private Volvo and it cost you between 999 to 1600 depending on the time and how early you book the tickets.
If rail is your option, you can take a train from Delhi to Pathankot and then take the local bus or Toy train from Pathankot to Paprola. From Paprola the taxi will cost you 300 rupee to Bir or take a local bus to Bir. The cheapest option is to take the local bus which runs from Delhi to Baijnath and it cost you 600 rupee. From Baijnath take roughly 25 rupees to Bir.
After reaching Bir, you have to take a taxi to Billing. Billing is the site where the paragliding takes place. It is just 14 kms distanced from Bir. this is the place from where the Raj Gundha Trek begins.
Rajgundha trek falls in the region of temperate climate. The temperature in summers is around 25 degrees with pleasant weather. Winters are not so harsh here and have an average temperature of around 1-2 degrees which is lower as compared to other high altitude treks. It receives a good amount of rainfall during the monsoon season and therefore trekking at this of the year is not preferable.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Rajgundha village is in the month of March-May. you may get to see snow in the month of March here. Snow depletes in the following month and the weather becomes pleasant. The mornings at this time are mesmerising.
At June end the monsoon arrives giving and the area receives a heavy amount of Rainfall. Trekking is not preffered at this time as the region is prone to landslides. Post monsoon season the hills become lively again with lush green forests. This time can also be a good time to trek to the village.
The first day one has to arrive at Bir. The distance from Delhi to Bir is 517 kms and can be covered in 11-12 hours. Once you reach Bir, you have to proceed towards Billing which is 14 kms away. One can reach there before an hour. Enjoy the thrill that paragliding gives you and camp here for a day to get acclimatised.
Billing to Raj Gundha
The trek starts the next day in the morning. Feel the breezy ambience of the hills around you and have scrumptious breakfast. The trek starts after having breakfast. Rajgundha trek is through dense Oak and Deodar forest. It is so rich in flora and fauna that one may many endangered species here. For those who love nature, this path is a green paradise.
After trekking for 2-3 hours you reach Channa Ghat which is the highest point of the trek at 2,700 metres. One side of this point is Kangra valley and the other side is Rajgundha Valley. Both the Himalayan ranges can be seen covered in snow.
Here is a temple called Saptvadini temple which can be visited. The journey proceeds toward Rajgundha village. Trek from here is downwards. After trekking for 1-2 hours, you will reach Raj Gundha forest and Kukkar Gundha villages. Raj Gundha and Kukkar Gundha are twin villages. Spend some time here knowing about their culture and traditions.
Raj Gundha to Parachak
After spending some time at Raj Gundha, we will move towards Parachak. One needs to trek for 7 kms which takes 3-4 hours. There is a dense forest but a well-defined route. Parachak is a place near to Uhl river where camping sites are present. Have dinner and sleep in natural habitat in your tents for the next day trekking.
Palachak to Bara Gran
The next morning we start our trek post breakfast towards Bada Gran village. This would take 3-4 hours of trekking. Bada gran village is an old village which is very close to the road head. People here live on farming and are very simple. After spending some time in the village you can trek down towards the road and get transferred to Bir.
The people of this part of Himachal have a very simple living. Most of the population practice farming. The culture of Mcleodganj is also affected by Buddhism as it is the place where Dalai Lama resides and therefore holds great importance. You not only find here the essence of adventure but also of spirituality and holiness. All these elements make Mcleodganj a perfect holiday destination.
Some of the travel packages are only for the Rajgundha trek whereas some also include sightseeing to nearby places like Mcleoganj and Kangra valley. The average cost for the trekking only package is INR 4,500 whereas the one which includes sightseeing is around INR 12,000.
