Sar Pass Trek: Hike the Himalayas
Sar pass trek is located in the Parvati valley in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh. ‘Sar’ in local Himachali dialect means a ‘Lake’. During this trek you get to pass through a small frozen and mesmerising lake called Sar, this is from where the trek gets its name. Kullu is at a distance of around 510 kms from New Delhi. This five-day trek is located at an altitude of 4,220 m above the sea level.
How to reach
Manali is well connected by all major cities like Delhi, Dehradun, Chandigarh and Shimla. Most of the buses from New Delhi to Manali operates at night time. There are both govt buses and private Volvo buses. You can get a bus around 5-8 pm from Delhi which makes you reach Manali in around 12 hours, by the morning.
The nearest railway station is Chandigarh, you can take an overnight bus from Chandigarh to Manali as well. If you are planning your journey by air, the closest airport is Bhuntar which is 52 kms away from Manali. Taxi services are available from Bhuntar to Manali which cost you around INR 1,000-2,000. You can also get local buses which would cost you less. It takes around 2 hours to reach Manali from Bhuntar.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Sar Pass in the summer months of April to June and winter months of December and January. If you want to see the natural beauty of Himalayas with all the green meadows and flowers then summer months are the ideal time for you to visit.
If you want to see snow and trek in snow, then visit Sar Pass in the winter months. At this time the whole area is covered in snow and the lake is frozen.
Sar Pass Trek is an easy to moderate level trek. This trek can be done without any prior experience of trekking. It is said to be easy when compared to other treks of the region but you must be physically fit and be ready for its moderate levels too. Sar Pass is one of the best treks when comes to the first timer. It gives you amazing views of the Himalayan peaks.
The climate in the Parvati valley is always pleasant. As you move up trekking, you will find snow at higher altitude. The average temperature during the day time is whereas the temperature remains around zero at the night time.
In the winter months, the area gets covered in snowfall completely and it becomes difficult. However many trekking enthusiasts who want to go for a winter trek do go for it. The temperature at day time is around zero and night are as harsh as below 10 degrees.
The first day you will have to reach Kasol from Kullu. The distance between Kullu to Kasol is around 40 kms and can be covered in 1- 2 hours. Kasol is the base camp for many of the treks in the Parvati Valley. You can go to nearby places for sightseeing. The next day we will start our trekking from Kasol.
Kasol to Grahan Village
Get up early in the morning and have the scrumptious breakfast. We will move on to Grahan village from Kasol which is 7-8 kms away and can be completed in an hour. From the road head, we will trek up to Grahan village. The trek is through the dense green forest, stream and waterfall. Initially, the trek is easy but after Grahan Nallah, it becomes rocky and difficult.
The trail becomes steeper as we get closer to the village. You will love the ambience of the village. It has traditional houses and scenic natural beauty. This village is a heaven for those who love nature and clicking photographs. Spend a night at the campsite amidst beauty.
Grahan to Mid Thach
The distance between Grahan and Mid Thach is around 7-8 kms. This path is used by the locals to carry their cattle to higher pastures. Here you will witness a great variety of flora and fauna. After some time, the forests vanish and open ground and valley become visible.
One can see the alluring views of snow-capped mountains and valley. Min Thack is surrounded by flat rocks and located on a hill. Spend a night here gazing to the billion stars and the milky way galaxy.
Min Thach to Nagaru
The next morning we will start towards Nagaru from Min Thach. This part of the trek is comparatively steeper as compared to the previous parts. The trail passes through forest and snow-covered meadows.
This day you will get an altitude shift so be prepared for it. The winds become chilling and temperature can go below zero at night. Once you reach Nagaru, you will see the mesmerising view of lofty mountain peaks. The alluring sunset will take away your heart. Spend a night here at the campsite with freezing air and flaming bonfire.
Nagaru to Sar Pass to Bishkeri
Begin early this morning as it will be a long trekking day. You are going to trek for around 12-13 kms which means 7-9 hours. Initially, the path is steep and full of snow. The trail gets moderate after climbing the Nagaru ridge. As you climb higher, you will see eye-catching views of snow-laden peaks of Manali.
Once you reach the top, you will get to see the mighty Himalayas and alluring views of the valley. Spend some time at Sar Pass and then start trekking downwards towards Bishkeri. The campsite at Bishkeri is full of natural beauty, there are lush green meadows, colourful flowers and diverse kind of birds.
Bishkeri to Barshaini to Kullu
This day will be the last day of our trip and we will trek back to Barshaini. We will descend back through the dense forest of deodar, oak and pine. There are beautiful meadows, huge trees, grazing cattle and some small tea shops. After hours of trekking through the forest, you reach Pulga and then to Barshaini. From Barshaini you can take a bus or taxi to Kullu.
