Sattal Lake: A Group of Seven Lakes in the Himalayas

Sattal Lake is a serene lake situated in the hills of Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It is located at a distance of 280 kilometres from New Delhi and 48 Kilometers from Bhimtal. It is a group of seven lakes that are connected with each other. The lake is one of the less touched and unpolluted places. It is rich in biodiversity and is a busy spot for migratory birds.

The ambience of the lake is ideal for someone looking for calm and relaxing holidays. There is enough natural beauty and adventure in Sattal. Visit it in summers for a pleasant and composed climate. This hill station has a lot to offer!

Sattal Lake: Seven Beauties!


Sattal Lake is located at an altitude of 1,370 metres in the lower Himalayan range. It is situated near Bhimtal in Uttarakhand. Sattal is a group of seven lakes interconnected to each other mysteriously hence the name.


It is at a distance of 280 kilometres from New Delhi and one can reach here overnight. The distance from Nainital and Bhimtal is 45 and 48 kilometres respectively.

How to Reach

Sattal can be reached via road, rail and air. From Delhi, One can take a bus from Anand Vihar Bus Stand to Haldwani or Nainital. Volvo buses run till Nainital only. Buses and taxis are available from Haldwani or Nainital to Sattal.



If you want to come by air, Pantnagar is the nearest airport. It is around 50 kilometres from the airport and you can get a taxi from here to Nainital, Bhimtal or Sattal. The nearest railhead is Kathgodam. It is around 25 kilometres from Sattal. Buses and taxis are available from here to Nainital and Bhimtal as well.

Best Time to Visit

Sattal is a peaceful hill station and the best time to visit this lake is in the summers months of April to June. At this time, the weather is pleasant and most of the people come here at this time for a picnic.

It is a famous picnic spot for people living near this town. Trees from a beautiful cover around the lake and make it a perfect spot for spending time with nature.


The climate in Sattal is warm and temperate in summers. Days are pleasant and nights are cool. The whole ambience is perfect for camping and picnic purposes. The average temperature in summers is between 15- 25 degrees. In winters the temperature drops to around 2-10 degrees. There is snowfall in these months.


Sattal gets converted in a pretty hill station in winters with amazing sceneries. Monsoon season is harsh here. There is heavy rainfall during the months of July- September. One must avoid visiting this place in these months as there are chances of landslides too.

Things to Do in Sattal

Butterfly Museum

There is a Butterfly Museum made by Frederic Smetacek at Jones Estate in Sattal. This museum has around 2,500 butterfly and moth species. There are 1100 insect species as well.

Subhash Dhara

This is a natural spring in the west side of the Sattal lake. This spring emerges from the dense oak forest of Sattal.


Sattal has a great area of forest cover of Rhododendron and Oak. You can enjoy trekking in the forest and click pictures of many rare species. This place is a paradise for nature and wildlife photographers.


There are many species of fishes in Sattal. You can ask your camp to arrange that for you. Nobody is permitted fishing without proper permission from the authority.

Mission Estate and Methodist Ashram

This Christian ashram is here since 1930 on the banks of Sattal Lake. The purpose of establishing it was to introduce Christianity in the Kumaon region.

Stay at Sattal

There are many camps, hotels and resorts in Sattal where one can stay. Most of the youngsters prefer camping to get some adventure vibes. You can get a night camping cost at around 800 bucks. It depends on the type of facilities available. Some camps are near to the lake and some are at a distance but in the forest area only.


Hotels in Sattal can be an expensive affair. The minimum price one can get for a day is around 1,500 to 2,000 for an average hotel. There are some lodges and guest houses costing around INR 2,000 to 4,000.


Sattal Lake is a perfect destination to spend some adventure and chilling moments. One can easily reach this lake overnight from Delhi or nearby places.  Those who have already explored other lakes in this region, it is a good option for a weekend getaway.
